Patch 9.19 is here and Teamfight Tactics has changed immensely as a result. However, perhaps the most intriguing change comes to the game in the form of a new unit – Kai’Sa. After being released for League of Legends back in March of 2018, the Daughter of the Void has found her way into TFT as the latest 5-cost unit.

Kai’Sa joins the TFT roster as the game’s 57th character and the 5th to have three traits. As a Void/Ranger/Assassin unit, Kai’Sa joins Gnar, Gangplank, Kennen, and Swain as the only characters to have multiple origins or classes.

However, with a recent massive overhaul to the way Void works in TFT, the question is now posed: is Kai’Sa actually worth it?

In short, the answer is usually no. It’s not entirely worth it to build a composition based entirely around Kai’Sa on Patch 9.19. The nerfs to Void (and Ranger and Assassin) don’t make Kai’Sa stand out in a crowd of characters that greatly overshadow her when it comes to traits and synergies. Perhaps releasing a Void Assassin at the same time as major nerfs to Void Assassin comps wasn’t the best plan of action in regards to a new champion release.

Still, it’s refreshing to see a game’s developer apply a level of balance to a new character instead of making them incredibly overpowered in hopes of garnering attention and subsequent priority for that character.

However, Kai’Sa does serve nicely as a complimentary piece. In some niche comps, Kai’Sa could fit in alongside other Void units such as Rek’Sai and Cho’Gath in Brawler comps, Kassadin in Sorcerer comps, and other Assassins in the newly rejuvenated Ninja Assassin comp. When it comes to utilizing Kai’Sa in Ranger-focused compositions, however, she usually isn’t the main choice as her 5-cost rarity usually persuades players into opting for the traditional Vayne/Varus/Ashe/Kindred combo that has reigned as the supreme Ranger comp throughout the game’s lifespan.

With all of this in mind, it’s fair to say that Kai’Sa isn’t necessarily worth building a composition around, as she’s never going to be the featured piece or carry in any situation – at least on this patch. However, if you want to pick her up and use her alongside another unit, her ability, Killer Instinct, is good enough on its own to warrant use of the character.
